Diffusion of large two-dimensional Ag clusters on Ag(100).
Scanning tunneling microscopy shows that large two-dimensional Ag clusters on Ag(100) can diffuse. The value of the diffusion coefficient at room temperature is of order 10-17 cm2s-1 and varies little, if at all, with cluster size in the range studied, 100 to 720 atoms per cluster. This weak variation rules out periphery diffusion as the main mechanism of cluster diffusion, suggesting instead t...
متن کاملStrain dependence of surface diffusion: Ag on Ag„111... and Pt„111..
Using density-functional theory with the local-density approximation and the generalized gradient approximation we compute the energy barriers for surface diffusion for Ag on Pt~111!, Ag on one monolayer of Ag on Pt~111!, and Ag on Ag~111!. The diffusion barrier for Ag on Ag~111! is found to increase linearly with increasing lattice constant. We also discuss the reconstruction that has been fou...
متن کاملSurface deposition and imaging of large Ag clusters formed in He droplets.
The utility of a continuous beam of He droplets for the assembly and surface deposition of Ag(N) clusters, ~ 300-6000, is studied with transmission electron microscopy. Images of the clusters on amorphous carbon substrates obtained at short deposition times have provided for a measure of the size distribution of the metal clusters. The average sizes of the deposited clusters are in good agr...

متن کاملSurface partition of large clusters.
The surface partition of large clusters is derived analytically for a simple statistical model by using the Laplace-Fourier transformation method. In the limit of small amplitude deformations, a suggested "hills and dales model" reproduces the leading term of the Fisher result for the surface entropy to within a few percent. The model also gives the degeneracy prefactor of large clusters. The s...
